The top two pieces of a statue depicting a Ptolemaic queen, possibly Cleopatra II or III, before and after it had been cleaned and excavated on the seabed.
This granodiorite statue was discovered in several pieces in the depths of Abu Qir Bay, approximately 32 kilometres northeast of Alexandria, in Egypt. It depicts a queen dressed as the Egyptian goddess Isis and once stood in the port city of Thonis-Heracleion, which was submerged beneath the waves due to many factors, including soil liquefaction, earthquakes and possibly tsunamis and tidal flooding.
The statue probably dates to the 2nd century BC. It is 2.2 metres tall (about seven feet).
