Mystery under the lake: 10,000 year old megalith carved with the image of a mammoth in Lake Michigan

Scientists have discovered a structure of large rocks arranged like the Stonehenge megalithic monument, but not in England but at the bottom of Lake Michigan, USA. Although this structure was discovered in 2007, very few people know about its existence.

Professor of Underwater Archeology Mark Hooley discovered this mysterious structure when he and his colleague Brian Abbot explored the lake bottom with an acoustic transmitter. The initial hope was to find the shipwreck, but they did not expect that there would be some of the most miraculous discoveries in recent decades.

This structure is located about 12 meters below the surface of Lake Michigan and the stone blocks are arranged close together in straight lines, not in circles like the megalithic monument Stonehenge.

Professor Holley talked about his experiences going to the bottom of the lake to explore this project: “Actually when I got to the bottom, it felt quite scary. There is something very mysterious and scary about this entire area. When you swim along the long row of rocks that stand out at the bottom of the lake, you will feel it.”

Currently, not many people know about the existence of this “Stonehenge megalithic monument at the bottom of Lake Michigan”. Maybe partly because the Native American community here does not want many people to come see the megalith.

However, the discovery of the megalith confused scientists. One of the building’s stones is said to depict an ancient mammoth, which is believed to have lived in the area more than 10,000 years ago.

Currently, this work is still located at the bottom of the lake, so it is still impossible to accurately conclude about the sculpture.

Professor Mark Hooley is trying to create computer models of this rock in the hope of helping determine the origin of the painting. Retired restorer Charles Cleland, of the University of Michigan’s Great Lakes archeology and ethnology department, remains skeptical about the discovery and believes that such sculptures are extremely rare in the Upper Midwest region of the country. America. So this is a very valuable archaeological work.

“But I still think it needs to be investigated further,” Mr. Cleland said. If we just leave it there without learning more about this mysterious structure, it would be bad.”

Until now, the Stonehenge-like stone structure has not been verified or evaluated, but scientists emphasize that many other stone circles of similar sizes have been discovered around the area. lake. Comparing with other locations around the globe, it will be seen that similar discoveries are not in short supply, because there are hundreds of underwater structures scattered across the Earth.

Scientists are now hypothesizing that this area may have been part of the mainland and inhabited in the past. Ancient people who lived by hunting in this area about 9,000 years ago erected this megalithic stone monument before it sank to the bottom of the lake.

Of the five lakes in the Great Lakes region on the US-Canada border, Lake Michigan is the only lake located entirely within US territory. It is also associated with the most strange things. Since the 15th century, unexplained disappearances of ships and planes have often occurred in Lake Michigan, occurring in a triangular area, known as the “Bermuda triangle in Michigan”.
